But for now, this collection of IP feels like it’s only half the battle, and you have to do something meaningful with that IP other than just…let all these cartoons shoot each other with guns. That may not be true forever, and perhaps they have larger plans in motion behind the scenes. Here, Fortnite is just reskinning the same default run-and-gun character 2,000 times, and has not really made any significant metaverse moves for what feels like a long time now. Smash Bros, at least, was bringing in these characters and allowing them to still be those characters with their own kits. Goku will be running around shooting assault rifles and handguns at people, but that’s really all he’ll do, other than attend the occasional live concert event or season-shifting finale. Over the past few years, Fortnite has assembled easily the largest collection of disparate IPs in a single game, bringing to life situations where you can be Batman wielding a lightsaber fighting off Master Chief, Kratos and Spider-Man on a rival team.īut this is essentially all it is, and I feel like Fortnite’s metaverse visions have slowly faded to feel less sharp than they were previously. It’s cool and yet it also feels kind of…empty? It’s hard to describe. But Dragon Ball Z, again, feels like the top of the mountain here for collabs in many ways. Call of Duty may have locked out Attack on Titan for itself, but I’ll be amazed if we don’t have Demon Slayer Fortnite skins in a year. We will likely see more and more anime collaborations in the future. It will sell well, of course, as I’m sure the Naruto collaboration did.
